Midterm Election Digest

23 days to Election DayDay score 0

Built from AP News, Reuters, Cook Political Report, Sabato's Crystal Ball, Inside Elections, official election-administration pages, and court dockets. Partisan outlets and opinion pieces are excluded as primary sources. Several ratings pages (cookpolitical.com, centerforpolitics.org, insideelections.com) returned stale cached pages or blocked direct fetches during today's research — noted inline where it limited a section.

Ossoff and Collins trade ethics and extremism charges in first debate

The two met for an hourlong, personal debate in Atlanta on Oct. 8. Ossoff pressed Collins on a House Ethics Committee probe and his son-in-law's neo-Nazi social media posts, and said Collins still believes the 2020 election was stolen; Collins didn't directly answer that charge and called Ossoff a "trust fund kid." The two also split on the Iran strikes and arms transfers to Israel. They meet again at an Atlanta Press Club debate Oct. 13, the same day Georgia's early voting opens; Election Day is Nov. 3.

Talarico's 12-day absence from the trail draws Paxton and Trump mockery

James Talarico's campaign says he's been recovering from the flu since disclosing the diagnosis Sept. 30; his last in-person Texas appearance was a Sept. 26 press conference. Paxton led "Where is James Talarico?" chants at a San Antonio rally, and Trump posted that Talarico was "MISSING IN ACTION" on Truth Social. A campaign source says Talarico attended a private NYC fundraiser Sept. 28; his campaign says he'll return for a CNN/Jubilee Media town hall in Fort Worth on Oct. 14.

Betting markets and Democratic money managers both lean into Kansas

Senate Majority PAC, the Schumer-aligned Democratic outside group, says it's "watching really closely" the Kansas race alongside Florida, South Carolina, and Mississippi, though it hasn't yet booked ad time there. Separately, Kalshi's betting market shows Republican Roger Marshall's win probability sliding from 82.8% on Sept. 5 to 62% on Oct. 8, tracking Cook's Oct. 6 move of the race to Toss Up.

Michigan's Rogers–El-Sayed debate and Trump's attacks on El-Sayed (covered in Issue No. 27) had no meaningful new development in the last 24 hours, so it isn't repeated here.

02Polling & forecasts

Generic ballot

No confirmed fresh move; data pulls were unreliable today

The last solidly confirmed reading is Silver Bulletin's D+8.9 (D+9.6 among likely voters) as of Oct. 7 — still the cycle high. Today's direct pulls of that page returned inconsistent numbers (one copy tagged "updated September 8" showing D+6.6), which looks like stale caching rather than a real move, so nothing new is being reported here. A separate aggregator, PollsMax, shows D+7.5 using a different methodology and polls through Oct. 4 — not a comparable series, included only for context.

Rating changes

No new confirmed Cook, Sabato, or Inside Elections moves found

Cook's Senate page still shows its Oct. 6 update with no new move since that batch; its House page carries an Oct. 9 date but no article or secondary source could be found confirming an actual rating change on that date, so nothing is scored from it. Sabato's dedicated ratings-changes page failed to load, and Inside Elections' dated "editions" pages returned stale cached content (April and June 2026) despite current-looking URLs. Treat this as a research gap, not confirmation that nothing moved.

03Election administration & security

No new, verifiable administration or security developments turned up in today's search. The DOJ's streak of losses in lawsuits seeking states' voter rolls — last confirmed at 26 straight dismissals — had no new ruling today. The Supreme Court's pending emergency application on mail-ballot rules, reported as outstanding since September, remains undecided as far as today's search could confirm. Nothing here is a new finding; it's a status check.

04Seat-change score

Today's score: 0. No confirmed nonpartisan race-rating change qualified today — see Section 2.
