01Race developments
Alaska Senate: a new NYT/Siena poll (fielded Sept 24–Oct 1, 504 LV, ±5.1) has Mary Peltola (D) leading Dan Sullivan (R) 50–43, essentially unchanged despite a Sept. 23 NYT report in which former and current staffers accused Peltola of verbal and physical mistreatment, including slurs; her campaign denies the allegations and attributes her documented temper issues to grief after losing her mother and husband within months of each other in 2023. Voters appear not to be moving off her in response. This is the same race Sabato's Crystal Ball reclassified today (see Polling & Forecasts below).
02Polling & forecasts
Cook Political Report moved three Senate races toward Democrats on Oct. 6: Kansas (Lean R → Toss Up), New Hampshire (Toss Up → Lean D), and North Carolina (Lean D → Likely D). Cook's own framing: Republicans retain a financial edge in most competitive states, but Trump is "a drag across the board" amid rising fuel prices and the cost of living. This batch was dated yesterday but missed by yesterday's digest run — caught today.
Sabato's Crystal Ball moved two Senate races the same day (Oct. 6): Alaska (Toss Up → Lean D) — notable since Alaska began this cycle rated Safe R, making this one of the larger directional swings of the cycle — and South Carolina (Safe R → Likely R, one notch more competitive). Also missed by yesterday's run; caught today.
Silver Bulletin's generic-ballot average held at D+8.9 (D+9.6 with the likely-voter adjustment) as of Oct. 6 — essentially flat versus the last several days' readings, still a cycle high-water mark for Democrats but not a fresh move this week.
03Election administration & security
No new, independently verifiable developments found in the last 24–48 hours. Checked for fresh Secretary of State statements, court rulings on voting rules, and the ongoing ICE-at-polling-places litigation; everything that surfaced in searches today turned out to be a repeat of items already covered in recent issues (South Carolina's absentee-ballot-cap dismissal, Pennsylvania's ICE polling-buffer bill) or stale by weeks to months (a West Virginia Secretary of State statement and a Denver ICE lawsuit, both from this summer; an ACLU mail-voting ruling from June). Saying so plainly rather than manufacturing an item for this section.
04Seat-change score
Flat ±1 per individual race-rating movement from a named nonpartisan rater (Cook, Sabato, Inside Elections), toward Democrats (+1) or Republicans (−1). Polls, fundraising, endorsements, and aggregate probability/generic-ballot numbers don't count — see methodology log for full rules.
